What is Kybella, and how does it work?
Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a prescription injection that breaks down the membranes of fat cells under the chin. The body then clears those cells over the following weeks. It is FDA-approved to improve moderate to severe fullness from submental fat in adults, and it is given in a series of short sessions by a healthcare provider.
Deoxycholic acid is a bile acid, a type of molecule the body makes to help absorb dietary fat. As an injection it is used in a measured grid, a small amount at each point, and only into the fat layer under the chin. A generic deoxycholic acid injection is also FDA-approved for the same use; Kybella is the brand we name on this page.

What happens at a Kybella appointment in Portland?

What does Kybella recovery look like, day by day?
Swelling is the main event. In the trials, 87% of people had swelling under the chin, along with bruising, tenderness and numbness. In one published series of 100 patients, swelling lasted about a week on average and numbness about four weeks. The area can look fuller before it looks slimmer.

What are the side effects and risks of Kybella?
Most side effects are at the treatment site: swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and firmness. Less often, Kybella can injure the nerve that moves the lower lip, causing an uneven smile, or cause trouble swallowing. In the trials these resolved without further treatment. Skin injury, lasting lumps and infection have also been reported.

An uneven smile or facial weakness in 4% of trial participants. All cases resolved, in a median of 44 days.

Reported in 2%, alongside swelling and firmness. Cases resolved, in a median of 3 days.
Skin injury
Injections placed too close to the surface can cause ulcers or tissue damage, which is why depth and grid matter.
Lumps and infection
Nodules, larger masses and infection have been reported. Some lumps may not resolve and may need medical care.

Can Kybella treat jowls, bra fat or other areas?
Only as an off-label use. Kybella is FDA-approved for fat under the chin. In September 2026 its label was updated to say use anywhere else is not recommended, after reports of serious reactions such as lasting lumps, nerve injury and vision problems. Our menu still lists jowl, bra and underarm, abdomen and inner-knee areas, and we treat them only after a consultation that covers these risks.

The FDA warns against unapproved fat-dissolving products sold online or at some clinics, often blends of phosphatidylcholine and deoxycholate. Reported problems include scars, serious infections and painful knots.

Kybella or another option for a double chin?
Kybella reduces fat under the chin with injections over a series of visits. Surgical liposuction removes fat in one procedure, fat-freezing devices cool fat from the outside, skin tightening treats looseness rather than fat, and chin filler adds projection. Who should not get Kybella?
Kybella is not given when there is an infection in the area, and it is not recommended for anyone under 18. Talk with us first if you have trouble swallowing, bleeding problems, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have had neck or chin treatments, or your fullness is mostly loose skin.
Can Kybella be used on jowls, bra fat or the stomach?
Only off-label. Kybella is FDA-approved for fat under the chin, and since September 2026 its label says use outside that area is not recommended, after reports of serious reactions.
