How many laser hair removal sessions will you need?
Most people need a series of at least four to six sessions, spaced about four to six weeks apart, because the laser only affects hairs in their active growth phase. Your exact number depends on the area, your hair colour and thickness, and how your skin responds, which we review at your Vancouver consultation.
- 4 to 6+Sessions in a typical series
- Hair grows in cycles, and only hairs in the growth phase respond. Each visit reaches a new group of follicles.
- 4 to 6 wksBetween sessions
- Spacing lets the next wave of hair reach its growth phase. Your plan sets the exact rhythm for each area.
- S · M · LArea sizes
- Priced by area size, from $50 a session for an upper lip to $125 for a large area such as a Brazilian.
- 6 wksNo waxing or plucking first
- Shaving is fine. Waxing, plucking and threading pull out the root the laser needs to find.
How does laser hair removal actually work?
A medical laser sends light into the skin, where the pigment in each hair absorbs it. That light becomes heat, which damages the growing follicle so it produces fewer and finer hairs over time. Because only actively growing hairs respond, results build across a series of visits rather than in one appointment.
Hair colour matters. Dark hair gives the laser the most pigment to find. White, grey, light blond and many red hairs carry little pigment, so they respond less, and we tell you plainly at your consultation when another approach would suit you better.
Settings for your skin. Settings are chosen for your skin tone and hair at every visit, and both you and your provider wear eye protection while the laser is in use.

- Light enters the skin. A controlled pulse passes through the outer layers.
- Pigment absorbs it. Dark hair takes in the most energy; light hair very little.
- Heat slows the follicle. Treated follicles grow fewer, finer hairs over the series.

Who is laser hair removal right for, and what rules you out?
Laser hair removal tends to suit adults whose hair is darker than their skin and who want fewer, finer hairs on the face or body. A recent tan or sunburn, an active rash or infection in the area, or recent waxing means waiting. Pregnancy, some medicines and very light hair need a conversation first.
Often a good fit
- Hair noticeably darker than your skin
- Tired of razor bumps, ingrown hairs or regular waxing
- Able to keep the area out of the sun between sessions
- Ready for a series spaced several weeks apart
Your first visit

Wait, or talk to us first

- An active rash, infection or broken skin where we would treat
- Waxing, plucking or threading in the past six weeks
- Pregnant or breastfeeding: ask us first
- Medicines that make skin light-sensitive: tell us when you book
- Tattoos in the area: we treat around them, never over ink
- White, grey, light blond or red hair: responds less
Suitability is assessed at your consultation.

What happens at a laser hair removal appointment?
Your first visit starts with a short consultation and a look at your skin and hair. Treatment is a series of quick light pulses with eye protection and cooling, taking minutes for an upper lip and longer for legs or a back. Afterward, expect redness for a few hours and hairs shedding over the next weeks.
Step 01 · Before
- Shave the area the day before; no waxing, plucking or threading for about six weeks
- Skip tanning and self-tanner, and use sunscreen on exposed areas
- Pause retinol and exfoliating acids on the area
- Don't apply numbing cream at home unless your provider directs it
Step 02 · During
- Protective eyewear for you and your provider
- Cooling and quick pulses, often described as a snap against the skin
Step 03 · After
- Redness and small bumps around follicles are common and settle within hours to a day or two
- Treated hairs shed over the following weeks
- Daily sunscreen; skip hot tubs, saunas and hard workouts for about a day

Shave, don't wax.
Waxing and plucking pull out the root the laser needs to find. Shaving keeps the follicle in place for your next visit.
Is laser hair removal worth it compared with waxing or shaving?
Shaving and waxing remove the hair you can see, so they need repeating every few days or weeks. Laser hair removal reduces how much grows back, so after a full series most people shave or wax far less often, with occasional maintenance. Electrolysis treats one follicle at a time and is an option for light hair.
| Feature | At Cosmetiq MedicineLaser hair removal | Waxing | Shaving | Electrolysis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How it works | Light energy slows regrowth from growing follicles | Pulls hair out at the root | Cuts hair at the surface | A fine probe treats each follicle one by one |
| How long smoothness lasts | Long-term reduction after a series, with maintenance as needed | A few weeks | A day or two | Long-term, after many visits per area |
| Visits | A series of 4 to 6 or more | Every few weeks, ongoing | Every day or two | Many short visits |
| Light, grey or red hair | Responds less | Works | Works | Works |
| Large areas like legs or back | Well suited | Suited | Suited | Slow for large areas |

What are the downsides and side effects?
Most people have short-lived redness, swelling around the follicles and some warmth or stinging. Less often the skin can blister, crust or change colour, and rarely scar, which is why sun protection and settings matched to your skin tone matter. All treatments carry risks; we review them at your consultation.
- Redness and swelling around follicles
- Warmth or a mild sunburn feeling for a few hours
- Treated hairs shedding over the following weeks
- Blistering or crusting
- Lighter or darker patches of skin
- Rarely, scarring, or more hair growth near a treated area
- Blisters, open skin or worsening pain
- Spreading redness, warmth or discharge

What pairs well with laser hair removal?
Smoother skin often leads to the next question: what about tone, texture and firmness? These treatments are commonly planned alongside a laser hair removal series, and your provider can space them so each area has time to settle between visits. Light and energy treatments are performed at our Vancouver clinic.

Will my hair ever grow back after laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal gives long-term hair reduction, not removal of every hair. After a full series most people see far fewer, finer hairs, but some fine hairs can regrow and hormones can prompt new growth, so many people book a maintenance session every 6 to 12 months. We set honest expectations for each area at your consultation.
How much does laser hair removal cost in Portland?
Prices depend on the size of the area. A small area such as the upper lip is $50 a session, $90 for three or $150 for six. Medium areas like the underarms are $85, $195 or $350, and large areas like a Brazilian or lower legs are $125, $350 or $550. The package of six includes one free session.
How many laser hair removal sessions do I need?
Most areas need at least four to six sessions, spaced about four to six weeks apart, because the laser only affects hairs in their growth phase. Coarse hair on the body often responds faster than fine or hormonal facial hair. Your provider maps the series for each area at your first visit and adjusts it as you go.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Most people describe each pulse as a quick snap against the skin, with cooling to take the edge off. Sensitive areas such as the upper lip or bikini line can feel sharper. Most people find it tolerable. If you are worried, tell us, and we will talk through comfort options rather than you applying numbing cream at home.
What disqualifies you from laser hair removal?
A fresh tan, self-tanner or sunburn on the area, an active rash or infection, or waxing and plucking in the past six weeks mean waiting. Pregnancy, light-sensitising medicines and very light, grey or red hair need a conversation first, and we never treat over tattoos. Suitability is assessed at your consultation.
What do people wish they knew before laser hair removal?
Shave, don't wax, between sessions. Treated hairs shed over one to three weeks, which can look like regrowth at first. Results build across the whole series, so skipping or stretching visits slows progress. Sun on the area means postponing. And maintenance is normal: plan on an occasional top-up session once your series is done.
Can men get laser hair removal?
Yes. Men often book laser hair removal for the back, chest, shoulders, neck and beard line to cut down on shaving and razor bumps. Large areas like the back take longer per visit and follow the same series and spacing. Coarse, dark body hair is often a good match for laser.
Can I get laser hair removal over a tattoo?
No. Tattoo ink absorbs laser energy, so we never treat directly over a tattoo. Your provider works around inked skin and may cover it during treatment. If you have a tattoo in or near the area you want treated, mention it when you book so we can plan the session around it.
